Caught in a Net...in a good way

I've never asked for anything before, right? Well, sorry, I'm asking now.

We need nets. Not hoop nets, soccer nets or lacrosse nets. Not New Jersey Nets or dot-nets or clarinets. Mosquito nets.

See, nearly 3,000 kids die every day in Africa from malaria. And according to the World Health Organization, transmission of the disease would be reduced by 60% with the use of mosquito nets and prompt treatment for the infected.

Three thousand kids! That's a 9/11 every day!

I read those words in a Rick Reilly column two years ago and thought how easy it would be to assist in something like that. I was coaching Jackson in AYSO and wondered if I get each family on the team to donate $10. Guess what, I'm still wondering, because I never asked.

It's now 2008 and the NYT has an article today about talking about different people who have done exactly what I have only thought about. So here's what I'm doing to start, Ainsley's soccer team scored 5 goals this year. I'm going to give $10 for every goal they scored and I'm not going to let another sports season go by without challenging the kids and parents to consider donating.

Donations can be made at NothingButNets.net.

Good for you! I too read that article two years ago (and the article that followed about a year later) and was moved to do something. We did a little, but I often think we should have done more. It's such an easy way to save a life and make a difference...
